Perfect surface protection for sandblasting and painting work
Metal components used in valve construction usually have to be painted and sandblasted beforehand. In order to avoid reworking or rejects, surface protection such as crepe, fabric tape or protective films are always used during surface treatment, depending on the application. Often, however, conventional products are not sufficient.
Two bottlenecks plus high expenditure of time
A customer of Krückemeyer GmbH had exactly these bottlenecks. The manufactured valve components were quite filigree and quite demanding in shape, so that openings, sealing points, connection points and threaded holes had to be individually and precisely masked or protected. The conventional products were no longer sufficient to provide adequate surface protection for sandblasting and painting. This resulted in increased time and costs due to scrap material and reworking.
For areas that were not to be sandblasted, fabric tape was used and the layer was made more resistant by multiple masking. This cost a lot of time with regard to the multiple and filigree work of masking by hand. The contours were then cut out with a knife or taped off piece by piece with the adhesive tape sections all around.
Conclusion: No exact contours could be masked and the workpieces were partially damaged by sandblasting. They thus became unusable for further processing and ended up in scrap.
As with sandblasting, the workpiece had to be reworked during painting because the contours could not be covered precisely enough with crepe. In addition, the crepe tape became full of varnish and the adhesive strength was no longer guaranteed. When the crepe tape was pulled off, lacquer tears occurred and the dirty contours had to be cleaned again in the end.
Finally, the customer needed surface protection that was precisely tailored to his needs for several phases of surface treatment.
Many challenges in one
Basically, the user needed two masking tapes with the appropriate properties for the individual processes. The product solution therefore had to solve the following challenges in one:
For sandblasting, the masking tape had to consist of a hard or hard-wearing carrier material. Precise and resistant masking should also be possible without friction. Strong adhesion was therefore required. In addition, residue-free removability had to be ensured so that no further cleaning work had to be carried out on the workpiece. For time reasons, multiple masking with the product should be avoided. The fast handling during masking was also a temporal aspect.
A masking tape was required for the painting process to ensure precise and clean masking; a material that absorbs the paint but does not absorb it completely. It should have a good adhesive strength with correspondingly residue-free removability. The fast handling during masking with the associated time saving should round off the product solution.
One product, two applications
Krückemeyer GmbH was even able to combine these many wishes and challenges in one product. The choice fell on the adhesive tape RK 450, which is equipped with a robust material, a strong rubber carrier.
As a die-cut part, the adhesive tape developed its special strengths. By means of the modular production it was possible to produce the desired shapes using punching and laser technology. As a flange cover, the masking tape could then be produced with internal hole punching in all radii to protect it from sandblasting and painting work.
The exact and stable fit made it possible to cover the edges and contours precisely. The entire form was thus exactly adapted to the workpiece and withstood the surface treatment extremely well. The adhesive tape was also equipped with a specially removable, strong adhesive for the corresponding metal surfaces.
Positioning holes were made on the adhesive tape cover in order to apply the punched part exactly and quickly to the flanges. Special "handles", i.e. grasping or peeling tabs, were applied to remove this cover in order to make handling as easy as possible.
In addition, the masking tape is temperature resistant and can be used in hot and cold environments.
